Firefighters are tackling a raging blaze in Eastfield at a derelict building.

Flames and smoke are bellowing out what is understood to be the former Burnside Resource Centre, with at least four crews attempting to extinguish the fire.

Officials say the derelict centre is “well alight”, and an eye-witness at the scene said the building was “smouldering”.

“There are at least five or six fire engines on the scene, and there is smoke pouring from the roof,” said the source.

“There are a pair of PCSOs keeping back the crowd.

“The fire is really bad.”

Around 100 people have gathered to watch the firefighters tackle the flames, and one witness has told The Scarborough News that there has been talk of possibly evacuating people in the area on safety grounds.

Crews raced from Scarborough after receiving a call about the fire at 9am, and more crews have reportedly arrived from Bridlington, Filey and even York.

An aerial appliance has been used to try and remove tiles from the single-storey building, and water jets are being used to try and douse the flames.

The cause is not yet known.

The building was sold at an auction at Elland Road, in Leeds, last November.

However, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue officials insist it is derelict.
