The body of a woman has been pulled from the sea in Scarborough.

Lifeboat volunteers recovered the body after police were called when a member of the public spotted her floating in the water near Scarborough’s lighthouse.

Tests are now being carried out to identify the identity of the woman, and the reason as to how the tragedy occurred.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at around 3.40pm on Monday 27 October, after a member of the public reported seeing a body in the sea at Scarborough off Sandside.

“Police attended the scene along with the RNLI.

“Sadly, the body of a woman was recovered from the water by the RNLI.

“Police are working to establish the identity of the woman and notify her next of kin.

“They will also carry out an investigation to establish the circumstances of her death and how she came to enter the water.”

A spokesperson for the RNLI added: “Scarborough RNLI’s inshore lifeboat launched at 4.01pm today at the request of the coastguard and police.

“A person who had been reported floating in the water near the lighthouse was recovered by the lifeboat, transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital.”
