The dramatic scenes have forced police to shut down Dean Road.

Armed police have been spotted in the area.

“There’s about four different police vans and loads of police cars on the scene,” said eye-witness Tom Hendry, a local restauranteur.

“Loads of people are watching this unfold, and they are quite close to the scene so I don’t think the police are too concerned.”

Traffic is being diverted as a result of the closure.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Police have closed Dean Road in Scarborough after reports that a man had entered a flat carrying a gun.

“Officers have also closed the junction with Castle Road and have cleared pedestrians from the area while they establish whether there is any threat to the public.

“People are advised to avoid the area at this time.”
