Northern Powergrid has confirmed that power has been restored to thousands of people in Scarborough.
Spokesman Roderick Stuart said that power was lost at over 40,000 properties at around 7.15am.
This went up to 85,000 people - across Scarborough, Filey, Whitby and Malton - when the power supply had to be interrupted for repair work.
Mr Stuart said that everyone’s power should have been back on by 8.33am, but that a secondary fault could be causing some homes and businesses to still be off.
Scarborough Council is still experiencing problems with the telephones lines in Customer First and is working to restore the service.
LATEST: The cause has been confirmed as a “freak birdstrike” at the substation in Queen Margaret’s Road, Scarborough.
Northern Powergrid spokesman Roderick Stuart said: “This is an extremely rare event. Repair work has been carried out and we now have a helicopter out checking the power lines between Scarborough and York.”
