Bridlington Coastguard called out to flare which had been set off during NHS applause

Reports of a distress flare set off in Flamborough which sparked a call out to the coastguard last night turned out to be part of applause for the NHS.

Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter were deployed after the red flare was seen at around 8pm.

A thorough search of the area was carried out before it was established that the flare had been set off as part of the "clap for the NHS" celebrations.

A spokesperson for the coastguard said: "Whilst we wholeheartedly support our colleagues in the NHS, members of the public are advised that the misuse of distress flares is a serious criminal offence."
