A NATIONAL award for service excellence has been awarded to a team of staff at Scarborough Council.
The authorities legal department is celebrating after being highly commended in the Excellence in Legal Services Achievement of the Year at the MJ Awards.
The awards were created to celebrate the best in local government.
The guest presenter was broadcaster and former No 10 communications chief Alastair Campbell.
Scarborough’s legal team missed out on the top spot, which went to Hackney Council for its work for the London Olympics.
However judges were impressed with the Scarborough team’s innovative work with schools on the Lawyers in School project.
They also praised the way management has “nurtured and developed a fit for purpose team from graduate talent to take on the demanding work that has been necessary to deliver the many regeneration projects that have taken place across the borough”.
Ian Anderson, the council’s head of Legal and Support Services said: “We are really pleased that the judges awarded us with highly commended and I am very proud of everything we have achieved in recent years.
“The fact we were up against some of the best local authority legal teams in the country is a testament to the hard work, vision and innovation of everyone.”
