Celebrating Scarborough’s love of Freddie

Scarborough’s beloved Freddie Gilroy statue in Royal Albert Drive has recently received a new coat of protective oil to ward off any damage from the elements.

So to celebrate that fact, we asked you to send in your favourite Freddie pictures to be featured in The Scarborough News.

We were inundated with snaps, showing how fond residents and visitors are of the giant sculpture, which was gifted to the town by Maureen Robinson in 2011.

The statue, by Ray Lonsdale, is based on a retired miner who was one of the first soldiers to liberate the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany at the end of World War Two.
