Charity looks to Filey for volunteers

THE Samaritans service is holding two information events for would-be-volunteers from Filey.

The sessions are being held at the Samaritans Centre in Trafalgar Street West, in Scarborough on Monday at 7pm and January 29 at 10am.

A recent survey of people in Yorkshire and the Humber showed that money worries are on the rise alongside redundancy and difficulty finding work.

With many difficulties on the horizon in 2011, Samaritans is expecting a rise in calls over the next few months from people who are in emotional distress and need to talk.

For this reason the organisation urgently needs more volunteers to help continue this vital service in Filey and Scarborough.

Kate, 30, has been a listening volunteer for a year. She said: “I wanted to give something back to society and to help people when they are in need.

“Samaritans is a fantastic charity that helps so many people, so it seemed the obvious way for me to get involved.

“I work full-time but as the commitment is only 12 hours a month, I find it easy to fit in around my career.

“It can be rewarding and the training is very thorough. I have never looked back.”
