Communal swimming in south bay

COMMUNAL swims are being run in Scarborough’s south bay.

Swimmers meet at beach huts 237 and 238, below the Clock Café.

Hot drinks and cake are provided for swimmers.

The huts combine a gallery and performance space with a place to warm up after a swim.

The joint activity is dubbed Sea Swim. Its patron, poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, says: “I am thrilled to be a patron of this beautifully simple and simply beautiful idea.”

A sea swim took place on Saturday, and the next are at noon on Thursday September 8, 4pm on Wednesday September 14 and 11am on Wednesday September 21.

“Swimming in the sea liberates the imagination and transforms the body,” says a spokesperson. “Our regular swims bring people together to enjoy the sea and take part in art.”

Sea Swim is part of imove, Yorkshire’s cultural programme for the London Olympics next year.
