GATES have been erected illegally in a historic Scarborough right of way, according the area’s local councillor.
Scarborough Council are currently investigating where the gates, in The Bolts in the old town, came from.
Cllr Colin Challen, who represents Castle ward, said: “I am sure that the owners of properties adjacent to the Bolts - which is an ancient right of way - have legitimate concerns about crime, but I wish they had approached the council before splashing out on these gates, which for obvious reasons cannot be used.
“We need to address concerns about crime which allows the rightful use of this passage but deters illegal activity. I hope the owners and the council can come to an agreement about appropriate crime prevention measures.”
The gates have not yet been found closed.
