The German supermarket
giant already had permission for its new facility on the site of the former McCain Stadium in Seamer Road.

But following its purchase of four homes at the entrance to the land it submitted a new application to create a wider road network and to expand the car park and shopping area.

This will mean the four homes will be knocked down.

This includes an increase in size of the foodstore, from 1,930 sqm to 2,470 sqm gross internal floor space, of which 202 sqm will be provided at mezzanine level to accommodate staff welfare facilities. Overall, the net sales area will increase by 138 sqm beyond the permitted scheme.

There will also be more than 100 car parking spaces, and there will now be two lanes in and out of the car park into Seamer Road.

Speaking at the planning committee meeting on Thursday, Cllr Eric Broadbent said: “I think the new scheme will make the entrance much better, the two lanes should help mitigate the flow of traffic in and out of the store.

“Demolishing the homes could also improve the street scene in the area.”

The supermarket chain, which has stores in Whitby, Pickering and Norton, says its Scarborough premises will be open between 7am and 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am and 4pm on Sundays.

The scheme must still pass a flood risk assessment and have its Section 106 agreement signed off.

Lidl will give £20,000 to
improve the traffic light system at the junction of Seamer Road and Queen Margaret’s Road.
