A Scarborough cafe owner landed himself in hot water when he was caught driving while over twice the legal alcohol limit.

Charles Usher (66) of Tennyson Avenue was arrested on January 15 after he was spotted driving his red Volkswagen Golf erratically on Castle Road.

Defending solicitor Robert Vining said Usher was an asset to the community and highlighted that he had never been before the courts before.

He added: “He is absolutely devastated to find himself her because normally he is the most conscientious of drivers.”

Usher pleaded guilty to the offence at a Scarborough Magistrates Court hearing last Thursday.

He was disqualified from driving for 20 months, to be reduced by five months if he completes a drink driver rehabilitation course.

Usher was also fined £230, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £15.

As he was leaving the court, Usher apologised to the magistrates for his offence.
