Hammer killer jailed for life

A man who was arrested at Filey Library after bludgeoning a pensioner to death in a vicious hammer attack has been jailed for life.

Graeme Jarman, 48, from Consett, County Durham hit 77-year-old woman Judith Richardson over 30 times during the attack in her Hexham flat last August.

He ransacked her home as she lay dying. He evaded capture for a fortnight before Police swooped on Filey Library after a member of staff raised the alarm.

Jarman, who has a string of previous serious convictions, was sentenced to a minimum term of 35 years in jail.
