A man and a woman have appeared at Scarborough Magistrates to face charges of manslaughter.

Both Claire Johnson and Daniel Kedge appeared in court on Monday 23 June to face the charge, with Mr Kedge also facing an allegation that he supplied a Class A drug.

The duo now face a trial over the allegations, which relate to the death of Natasha Johnson in Scarborough last year.

She died on May 22 2013, and this was the first time either of the defendants have appeared in court over her death.

Neither of the defendants entered a plea during their hearings, and magistrates immediately passed the case up to York Crown Court due to the serious nature of the allegations.

Both Kedge, of Carlton Terrace in Halifax, and Johnson, of Market Way, appeared before the court having previously been released on bail.

Flanked by a pair of supporters during the brief hearing, Johnson fought back tears during her brief hearing, speaking only to confirm details of her address.

Both Kedge and Johnson, 41, appeared at separate morning hearings, and both were bailed with instructions not to contact each other.

Kedge, 40, was also ordered not to enter Market Way before the next hearing at Leeds Crown Court.

Magistrates ordered the pair to appear at that court on Monday 7 July.
