Scarborough police are appealing for any victims of metal theft over the past 24 hours to contact them following the arrest of three men.

At around 11.30am today a pick-up was seen in the Columbus Ravine area of Scarborough picking up scrap metal.

A member of the public became suspicious and reported the activity to the police.

Officers attended the area and located the pick-up which was found to contain suspected stolen property. The three men were arrested on suspicion of theft.

Police officers are urging anyone who has had metal items stolen in the past day or so, to contact them so they can verify the rightful owners of the property.

The arrested men are all from the County Durham area and are aged 19, 23 and 35. All three remain in police custody for questioning.

Investigating officer, PC Simon Jolly of Scarborough Police, said: “The discovery of the suspected stolen items is down to a quick thinking member of the public who became suspicious and reported their concerns to the police.

“We were then able to take swift action and arrest the men. A great example of how members of the public can help the police by going with their instincts and reporting anything which looks suspicious.”

Anyone who believes they are the victim of metal theft recently is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Simon Jolly, or you can email PC Jolly at simon.jolly@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
