Vandals cause extensive damage to North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Pickering

Vandals wreaked hundreds of pounds worth of damage during an attack on the heritage railway in Pickering.

The culprits smashed and broke lampshades and released the handbrake of a North Yorkshire Moors Railway carriage in the yard at Pickering Station.

They also knocked over and broke the leg of a chair, threw first aid and eye wash kits on the floor and blocked two toilets.

Releasing the carriage's handbrake meant that it rolled about a foot from where it had been safely parked.

Police say the damage caused in the wrecking spree amounts to around £700.

Officers are trying to find the vandals and have been trawling through CCTV in the area and carrying out forensic examinations.

They are urging anyone with information about the damage, which happened between 4.30pm on Friday and 4pm on Sunday, to call them on 101, select option two, and leave a message for Craig Hardcastle.
