DETECTIVES are investigating a serious assault where a woman was attacked in East Ayton.

The incident happened at a detached home in Carr Lane.

The gates to the property were taped off and a blue and white tent stood over the doorstep. A lone officer was still guarding the scene yesterday.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the victim was a local woman. She was first taken to Scarborough Hospital before being transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary where she is being treated for what have been described as “serious injuries”.

A man in his 50s had been arrested in connection with what is understood to have been a domestic incident which took place on Sunday evening.

Detective Inspector Bill Burns, of Scarborough CID, said: “This is a serious incident which we are progressing as quickly as possible in order to establish the facts. We are not at this time looking for anyone else in connection to this incident.”

The woman’s condition was described by police as “serious” and officers from Scarborough Police’s Protecting Vulnerable Persons Unit have been involved in the investigation.

The man who was arrested was later released on police bail.

Neighbours living in the quiet cul-de-sac were left shocked in the wake of events. One resident, who did not give her name, said: “It’s very sad and we hope she survives.”
