Day of festivities to welcome the Tour

There will be a definite party atmosphere in the air in Scarborough on Sunday thanks to an action-packed program of entertainment, which has been planned to create a real buzz among spectators who will be eagerly awaiting the finish of Stage Three of the Tour de Yorkshire.

In addition to big screens in Foreshore Road and Royal Albert Drive, which will be showing live televised footage of the race, Scarborough Council has worked with Create Arts to enlist some of the best musical, creative and sporting talent from across the region. Entertainment will take place in South Bay, North Bay and other nearby locations from noon through until 7pm as follows:

Noon to 4pm (Royal Albert Drive/Marine Drive)A parade of large and abstract cycles, including a clockwork four wheeled diamond shaped unicycle, a ten foot tricycle, an old fashioned penny farthing and a six foot unicycle.

Scarborough School of Arts (outside Futurist Theatre)The Creative Arts faculty at Yorkshire Coast College will be presenting live music, a pop up art gallery and costumes on their stage. See and hear student work under the banner of their exciting new brand “Scarborough School of Arts”.

Captain Crackers and his hunt for the hidden treasure (various seafront locations)There will be laughter and mischief as Captain Crackers and his crew enjoy the Tour de Yorkshire celebrations. Spectators are encouraged to get a “selfie” with the characters ahead of their shows at Scarborough Spa later in the year.

1pm to 4pm Animated Objects Theatre Company (Royal Albert Drive/Marine Drive)The company will be on walkabout with two of its large puppets – look out for the giant fisherman and his fishy friend.

1pm to 1.45pm and 2.30pm to 3pm Coastival Choir (Rotunda Museum)Biketastic Big Sing with Coastival Choir. Spectators are encouraged to join in with the “wheely” easy songs with a cycling theme.

1.30pm to 2.20pm and 3pm to 3.50pm New York Brass Band (Royal Albert Drive)New York Brass Band is North Yorkshire’s only contemporary New Orleans inspired brass band. Hailing from York, the band comprises some of Yorkshire’s finest musicians packs an arsenal of percussion, sax, trumpets, trombones and sousaphone.

1.45pm to 2.30pm and 3pm to 3.45pm Howard Beaumont (Rotunda Museum)King of the keyboards and resident Scarborough Spa organist Howard Beaumont will treat spectators with organ, jazz combo and orchestral voices as he celebrates 50 years as a professional organist.

1.45pm to 2.45pm (Royal Albert Drive) The ‘Final Mile’ Community Fun RideOrganised by Scarborough and Ryedale Community Cycling group, the ride will be made up of specially-adapted bikes ridden by people of all abilities and ages, including guest of honour, 100-year-old honorary life president of Scarborough Paragon Cycling Club, Stan Chadwick.After the huge success of last year’s community cycle fun ride, “The Final Mile,” which saw more than 180 riders cross the finish line as part of the Tour, the group was asked to organise a similar event. Stan and old cycling pal Brian Musson, Paragon club chairman, will lead the procession as guests of honour.Ron Brown, who chairs Scarborough and Ryedale Community Cycling, said: “Stan had his last social cycle ride when he was 90 and his family approached us to see if we could provide a bike that would enable him to have a ride.”He added: “Stan is up for the challenge and will be leading all our riders over the finish line!”All riders are raising funds for the RNLI. They will set off from Hairy Bob’s Skate Park on Scarborough North Bay at 2pm.

2pm to 2.30pm (Foreshore Road balcony) Vintage fair band

2.45pm to 3.30pm (Royal Albert Drive) and 5pm to 5.45pm (Blue Crush, Peasholm Gap) Granny TurismoThe world’s first and only shopping trolley dance display team will be showing the cyclists and the spectators a thing or two with their suped-up shopping trolleys.

3.30pm to 3.50pm (Royal Albert Drive) Pauline Quirke AcademyLook out for the academy’s exciting flash mob.

5.30pm Music @ Farrer’s (Scarborough Spa)To celebrate the end of the Tour de Yorkshire Farrer’s Bar and Brasserie will host an evening of live music, featuring the fabulous Jelly Roll Jazz Band.

7pm Ventoux (Stephen Joseph Theatre, Northway)Ventoux is the most fearsome mountain encountered on the Tour de France. It is also the story of Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani, whose drug-fuelled race back in 2000 was the greatest the world of cycling had ever seen. Ventoux charts the parallel lives of these champions who overcame great adversity in tandem and the mountain that cast them in opposing directions. Join 2Magpies as they restage the race using breathtaking video accompaniment and a pair of road bikes, asking the question – how far will we go to succeed?

Maserati tour from Open Air TheatreDon’t miss the sportive riders taking part in the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride. After leaving in staggered starts from the Open Air Theatre, they will take in some of the route that the professional riders will race later, before crossing the finish line on Royal Albert Drive between 9.30am and 3pm.
