Decision made on future of libraries

THE blueprint for the future of libraries across the Scarborough area has been approved by councillors.

Bosses from North Yorkshire County Council’s executive committee yesterday backed a plan based upon the existing branch network of provision.

The proposals are designed to retain all of the authority’s libraries – including those in Scarborough, Scalby, Eastfield, Ayton and Hunmanby – with Malton and Norton libraries merging together.

The plans are based on the libraries being run by county council staff or local volunteers or by a combination of the two.

A county council spokesperson added: “The council has already introduced a ‘supermobile’ library service, offering superior facilities including internet access, at more remote locations.

“In addition, the Home Library Service, in which volunteers deliver books and other library items to people who may have difficulty leaving their homes, is being extended.”
