Fifteen members from one Scarborough martial arts club will take on the best kickboxers in the world at the ICO World Championships in Birmingham this weekend.

The Desapline Martial Arts Club, set-up and run by head coach Andy Desa, will be represented on the international stage by 15 of their members in Birmingham after they impressed at previous competitions they have competed at earlier this year.

A club spokesperson said: “We are extremely proud of all of our students who will represent Team England at the ICO World Kickboxing Championships in Birmingham.

“They have trained extremely hard and are really looking forward to the competition and hopefully will be bringing some medals or trophies back to Scarborough too.”

“It’s a massive achievement for the club.

“There are around 200 fighters in the England team from all over the country.

“We have travelled to Birmingham for numerous training squads plus had training for the northern squad sessions here in Scarborough.”

The Scarborough club have been supported by local businesses and organisations, as well as fundraising themselves in order to compete.

The club spokesperson added: “OurCo donated £1,000 and Scarborough Lions Club also helped us out with a £200 offering.

“All other money needed was raised by the 15 students themselves through car boot sales, raffles and a fight night.”

The event in Birmingham starts on Friday and runs through until Sunday.
