Sir Greg said he will be seeking assurances that everything possible is being done to contain and eliminate the virus as well as ensuring that there was minimal risk to human health in the region.

On 16 November it was reported that a case of bird flu had been confirmed at a duck breeding farm in Nafferton, the first in the UK since 2008.

An exclusion zone around the farm in the village of Nafferton has prevented all poultry and poultry waste being transferred in or out of the area, and some 6,000 ducks are to be culled.

Reports from DEFRA experts say that it is not the deadly H5N1 strain. They say the public health risk is very low and there is no risk to the food chain.

Sir Greg said: “Lessons must be learnt from this outbreak so that we are even better prepared in the future should there be a next time”.

Sir Greg said it was difficult when dealing with a virus that was spread by birds, including wild ones, over which there was no human control.
