SHERBURN primary school has welcomed a new headteacher.

Alison Stephenson has taken over the reins from Carol Barnes and said she is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Mrs Stephenson, 39, of West Ayton, joined the school after leaving her role as assistant headteacher at Norton Primary School last term.

She said despite the school’s significantly lower pupil count - it has just 44 youngsters on the register - she had quickly adapted to life in her new environment thanks to its friendly atmosphere.

She said: “It has been a very busy time getting to know the children and their families, and of course, all of the staff.

“It is a new challenge for me because this is a completely different and smaller school to that which I was at before.

“However, I have enjoyed my time here so far and everyone has been so friendly.

Mrs Stephenson, who has been involved in teaching for 17 years, including a period in Kuwait where she worked with her teacher husband Gareth.

She added: “I had quite a bit of responsibility at Norton which I believe have helped prepared me for the things that will lie ahead.

“At the moment I’m just concentrating on all of the things that Carol did here, but I do have a few ideas of my own for the future.”
