Coventry University Scarborough Campus opened its new £14 million facility to students for the first time today.

The Weaponness campus has opened its doors a week after the neighbouring Scarborough University Technical College (UTC).

The official opening will take place a week today when Welcome to Yorkshire's Sir Gary Verity will be the guest of honour.

Sir Gary said: “The opening of this new campus is a major coup for Scarborough, and another significant investment project championing the renaissance of this great town.

“Scarborough is thriving, with its refurbished Spa, harbour, open air theatre and brand new Alpamare waterpark all contributing to the feel-good factor sweeping the resort.

“The campus will bring thousands more talented academics to Scarborough and the knock-on benefit that brings to the local economy is huge. Those students are in for a treat as the town and surrounding area has so much to offer.

“The Yorkshire coast is packed full of attractions, and the vibrant cities of York, Leeds and Hull are all within easy reach.

“I for one am honoured to be opening the university and cannot wait to look around the campus having followed its progress with great interest ever since plans were first submitted.”

The state-of-the-art complex will eventually house more than 2,000 students, and Sir Gary said it will not only bring talented academics to the area but also have a huge impact on the region’s economy.
