STUDENTS from a Scarborough college made their voices heard during a national debating challenge.

The three Scarborough Sixth Form College students - Laura Dixon, Matt Jennings and Jack Staples-Butler - made a big noise in the Youth Speaks Competition in Hull, arguing the question ‘Is there democracy in the UK?’ with great distinction.

The competition, organised by the Rotary Club, and is designed to give youngsters experience and confidence in public speaking and saw Mr Staples-Butler rewarded with the best speaker honour in the competition’s senior section.

Jenny Dodd, the college’s Guidance Support Tutor, added: “I am very proud that the team got to the Regional Finals of the Youth Speaks competition and extremely pleased with the performance Jack gave.

“He was thrilled to receive the award.”
