A spokesperson for the local group said: “Scarborough Council was one of the first local authorities in the country to declare a climate emergency, but now we need more than just words. We need action at a local, national and international level, and we need everyone on board.

“With the COP26 UN climate talks due to be held in Glasgow in November, XR is planning for a busy year ahead.

“Already we are seeing the impacts of climate change in more frequent and severe floods, fires, heatwaves and rising sea levels, making business-as-usual no longer an option if we want to survive and thrive on this planet.

“We also want a just transition to a more sustainable world, so that those who are least responsible for the crisis are not the ones paying the highest price. In our region, this could be people who can’t afford to insure their homes and businesses against flooding and pedestrians forced to breathe in toxic fumes.

“As long as fossil fuels are subsidised by government and green choices are made less affordable, we remain locked in to a dangerous future of climate and ecological breakdown that ultimately threatens us all.”

The introductory talk ‘Heading for Extinction – and what to do about it’ will be presented in Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington over three days starting this Friday.

Speakers from Extinction Rebellion North will be giving the talk, which will be followed by training sessions on how to get involved in the rebellion. There will be workshops on non-violent direct action as a proven method of affecting change, techniques of mass mobilisation, and how to have a climate conversation.

Entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

The first session will be held from midday this Friday, February 21, at the Whitby Friendship Rowing Club, New Way Ghaut, Church Street, followed by an evening of Rebel songs. There will also be a social at the Black Swan pub from 9pm, featuring music from Bongoman and the Bongomaniacs and the Counterfeit Celts.

On Saturday, February 22, the venue is the meeting room at The Star in Mitford Street, Filey, with the session running from 12pm until 4pm. And there will be a further talks and training at The Queens Hotel in High Street, Bridlington Old Town, from 5pm until 9pm on the same day.

Finally, the rebellion will be coming home to Scarborough from 12pm until 7pm on Sunday, February 23, at The Waterhouse in St Thomas Street. This will also be followed by a gig featuring the same artists.
