Exciting new classes in new joint venture

A joint venture between the Workers' Education Association and the Stephen Joseph Theatre is bringing exciting new classes ranging from literature and film studies to samba drumming and dementia-friendly dance to the theatre this autumn and winter.

The WEA has been providing high-quality educational opportunities to communities since 1903 with more than 74,000 students in England and Scotland last year.

This year, it is teaming up with the SJT to provide a central venue for many of its culture-themed Scarborough courses alongside brand new theatre-themed classes taught by the SJT team.

The 10-week-long courses are free to those claiming benefits (including working tax credits, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Housing Benefit, Pension Guarantee Credit); or £70 otherwise.

The WEA’s Steven Blockley says: “The WEA and the SJT have both had a big impact on adult education locally over the last few years.

“Pooling resources and working together is providing us with a unique opportunity to develop a whole host of innovative and exciting new courses for Scarborough.”

Paul Robinson, Artistic Director at the SJT, said: “We’re delighted to be teaming up with the WEA to present these fascinating new courses. Like the WEA, we’re committed to our local community, and this is another opportunity for us to expand that commitment.”

The courses are:

l Introduction to Acting at the SJT (tutor: Cheryl Govan)

A beginner’s guide for adults. Tuesdays 4-6pm from 20 September

l Dementia-friendly Dance Class (tutor: Kate Paul

Gentle, creative, non-judgemental. Includes cake. Thurs 11-1pm from 22 September and again from 19 January.

l Samba Drumming Workshop (tutor: Ernest Acquah)

Fun, energising – no previous experience needed.

Sundays 2-4pm from 25 September, and again from 22 January.

l Film Studies: Ten Award-winning Films Revisited (tutor: George Cromack)

l Acapella Singing for Women: Harmony and Health (tutor: Bridget Cousins). For mental and physical wellbeing.Tuesdays 10am-noon from 27 September and again from 10 January

l Creative Writing: Crime, Mystery, Suspense, Gothic & Ghostly Tales (tutor: George Cromack). Keep the reader wanting more. Thursdays 7-9pm from 29 September

l The Story of the English Stage: from Medieval to Restoration Drama (tutor: Judith Carter). The Middle Ages to the 17th Century. Mondays 1-3pm, from 16 January

l Film Studies: Ten Maverick Directors (tutor: George Cromack)
