Firefighters tackle large bracken fire near Pickering

Four fire crews were called after a fire started in an area of forest near Pickering yesterday.

Firefighters from Whitby Goathlane, Malton and Kirkbymoorside were called to Lockton at about 3pm yesterday afternoon after an area of bracken caught fire.

Approximately one hectare of bracken was smouldering due to the flames with firefighter on scene for more than six hours dampening down the area, until about 9pm.

Crews used a lance, hose reel jets and beaters to extinguish the fire.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service visited the site again this morning to ensure the flames were extinguished.

Areas of scorched earth were left behind.
