Three Scimitar-Horned Oryx calves have been born at Flamingo Land Resort Yorkshire. Two females and one male have been born to females Cersei and Little Beate and sired by father Phileas, who has become a father for the first time.
Ross Snipp, zoo manager at Flamingo Land, said: “This is excellent news for the conservation of this species and we look forward to working with the Sahara Conservation Fund to hopefully assist in release of oryx into sanctuaries in North Africa. We hope that oryx born at Flamingo Land may be part of the release programme.”
Scimitar-Horned Oryx have been declared extinct in the wild since 1999.
