Flasher jailed for lewd act on bus

Kyril McClean, 24, was sat opposite the horrified teenager on a public-transport bus in Scarborough when he performed a lewd act.

The tawdry incident occurred on March 2 when McClean - who has two previous convictions for flashing - was on bail for serious driving offences committed a month earlier, York Crown Court heard.

On February 6, McClean took his grandmother’s Vauxhall Corsa without her consent, then sped through the streets of Scarborough with police in pursuit.

Prosecutor Martin Bosomworth said a female traffic officer spotted McClean on Scalby Road.

Knowing he was a banned driver and not properly insured to drive his gran’s car, she tried to pull him over, but he sped off down Briercliffe Avenue before bombing through a 20mph zone and overtaking a van and a bus, swerving so violently that the car ended up on a pavement on the other side of the road.

So dangerous was McClean’s driving that the officer abandoned the pursuit.

He was arrested later the same day but, almost laughably, denied he was behind the wheel. The Corsa was recovered two weeks later in a lock-up near to where the car chase began.

McClean was charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was bailed, but a month later he pulled the flashing stunt on a bus carrying three or four passengers, including a “shocked” college student sat opposite him.

McClean was re-arrested after officers identified him on the bus’s CCTV system. Again he made bizarre denials, this time claiming he had been at a “foreign drugs factory with drug barons”.

Mr Bosomworth said it was McClean’s third conviction for flashing, the first being in January 2011 when he exposed himself at the Brunswick shopping centre.

In March last year, he was given a four-month jail sentence and put on the sex-offenders’ register after exposing himself in front of a woman on a Scarborough-to-York train.

McClean, formerly of North Lane, Cayton, appeared for sentence on Tuesday after admitting indecent exposure on the bus and the driving matters.

The court heard he had a long criminal record littered with convictions for burglary, drug offences, battery, theft and criminal damage. He has three previous convictions for driving while disqualified.

In August 2013 he was given a 12-month prison sentence for arson and a year later was jailed for making explosives.

Defence barrister Tom Stanway said McClean had endured a difficult childhood and had a personality disorder.

He added that McClean, lately of Boroughbridge Road, York, had been trying to find new accommodation away from his grandparents’ home in Cayton, although he was still allowed to visit them.

Judge Neil Davey QC said the flashing victim was left highly-distressed and that McClean had posed a “substantial danger” to members of the public during the police chase.

He handed McClean a 14-month jail sentence and 19-month driving ban. He also made a new two-year restraining order which prohibits McClean from harassing or intimidating his grandmother, or using or threatening violence against her.
