THE annual Fishermen and Firemen’s Fund football match on the South Bay sands raised a record amount for charity, it has been revealed.
A total of £1,421.70 was raised for the fund thanks to the Boxing Day favourite, comfortably topping the just under £1,000 raised last year.
Secretary Liz Blades said: “It is a record-breaker, which is fantastic. I think the weather helped. We wish to thank everyone who contributed and helped make the event such a success.”
The match ended in a 6-4 victory to the Fishermen team – although there was speculation they had fielded an extra five players.
The game has been a tradition in the town since 1893.
