Full Council results including Savile decision

A brief round-up of today’s meeting at the Town Hall.

Council tax frozen for another year

Scarborough councillors have voted to freeze council tax for the next year.

There were 34 votes for the move and seven against.

New mayor for Scarborough

Scarborough’s new mayor for 2013/2014 will be Cllr Andrew Backhouse, who has been the deputy mayor for the past year, and Cllr Pat Marsburg will be the new second in command.

Savile stripped of honour

Councillors voted unanimously to strip Jimmy Savile of his Freeman of the Borough status, following a motion by leader Cllr Tom Fox.

Cllr Fox stood up and strenuously denied having any knowledge of Savile’s “dark side” prior to the ITV Exposure documentary.

He made the bold statement after claiming he has been subject to “continued abused and false allegations” with regards to Savile’s conduct.

He said: “Reference has repeatedly been made to my role as a police officer working in the borough of Scarborough that I must have known that Jimmy Savile was a paedophile and that rumours existed about him and that I must have been part of a cover-up. I can categorically state that they are without foundation, evidence or justification. I never encountered one single complaint about the conduct of Jimmy Savile.”
