COMMUNITY groups have been given a cash boost thanks to Newby and Scalby Parish Council.

Cheques for various amounts were presented to a number of volunteer groups in the parish.

One of the recipients was Newby and Scalby In Bloom, which received £500 from the “Treasure Chest” funding pot.

Chairman Peter Staveley said: “We’re really pleased - this is going to help keep us going as a bloom group.

“It’s really important to us as money is tight in these times.”

He said it will go towards the groups activities including planting, litter picking and creating new beds.

Mr Staveley added: “We’re run entirely on grants, sponsorship and donations. This is the first time we’ve had money from the ‘Treasure Chest’ and we’re very grateful.”

Other groups which have benefited from the funding include Dane’s Dyke and Keld Close Community Centre, Troid Ryu, Newby and Scalby Women’s Institute, Newby and Scalby Badminton Club and Scalby Fair.

The cheques were presented by Cllr Derek Bastiman on behalf of the parish council.
