Gershwin on lunch menu

PIANIST Frank James and narrator Phillip Mindenhall will present The Gershwin Story at tomorrow’s lunchtime concert at the library.

George Gershwin was the first and most successful composer to combine jazz and classical music, says promoter Maria Billington.

“His story is interesting because in Europe he was mixing with some of the greatest composers of the day, but in America he socialised with Hollywood film stars,” says Maria.

“His music is brilliantly conceived and will appeal to those who like both idioms. His arrangements for piano are numerous, and include I Got Rhythm, Facsinating Rhythm and S’Wonderful.

The concert is due to begin at 12.30pm.
