A SCARBOROUGH couple are still smiling 50 years on as they celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary today.
John and Yolande Lord, of Scalby Road, are marking the milestone at a party with friends and family at the Park Manor Hotel tomorrow.
The couple got together when Yolande, who is originally from Thirsk, came to Scarborough to work in hotels.
They met at a 21st birthday party - even though Yolande was going out with someone else at the time!
The pair settled in John’s hometown of Scarborough and were married at St Mary’s Church.
They went on to have two children, Michelle and Jonathan, and now have three grandchildren.
John and Yolande ran their own hotel, the Seaview, in Castle Road, for around 20 years.
Yolande, 75, said: “It was lovely up there. You could see the sea in the North and South bays from the hotel.”
John worked at Plaxton full time and his wife was in charge of the hotel.
They are now both retired and are enjoying a more relaxed pace of life.
John has always been interested in football and was a keen player in his younger years, also helping to run the Scarborians team.
Yolande has just taken up going to the gym and says she feels “wonderful”.
They also enjoy spending time with their family and friends and are looking forward to the celebration lunch tomorrow.
Yolande said: “I can’t believe it’s our Golden Wedding already - the years have gone so quickly.
“But I can remember our wedding day as if it were yesterday.
“We’ve had our ups and downs like everybody else, but we’ve always tried to do everything right.
“We’re really good friends and we enjoy each other’s company.”
