A bitter wind fresh off the North Sea failed to put off the thousands of enthusiasts who come to Whitby twice a year.

There is barely room to move along the narrow streets, such is the volume of people from alternative lifestyles in the town.

There was added excitement yesterday as two Goths from Robin Hood’s Bay were married at Whitby Registry Office.

David and Jools Winter originally married at a Pagan ceremony in Glastonbury two years ago, but as this is not recognised in British Law, the couple have tied the knot for a second time.

And the pair have waited specially for this Goth weekend.

David explained why the festival means so much to them: “We love the camaraderie of the event. It doesn’t matter what form of alternative lifestyle you are from, everybody just gets on.

“Whitby is so welcoming as well, we are lucky in that we live locally and visit often but there is no looking down on any group, everyone just goes there to have a good time.”

Around 30 people from a variety of alternative lifestyle backgrounds, including Punks and Goths, attended the service, as well as members of the couple’s family.

November 5 is especially significant for David who says research into his family tree has revealed that he has a long-standing lineage connecting to the sister of Thomas Wintour, one of the conspirators behind the gunpowder plot.

David did reveal to the Gazette however, that his own ‘Winter’ surname is a fluke which came into his lineage further down the line.

Last night saw live music performed in Whitby's Pavilion from: The Mission, Skeletal Family, Children On Stun and Chasing Dragons.

This afternoon a charity football match will take place between Real Gothic FC and Stokoemotiv Whitby FC at the Turnbull Ground.

Kick off is at 2pm.
