Happy couple’s engagement joy

A Scarborough couple are feeling on top of the world after getting engaged at the top of the town’s iconic lighthouse.

Ben Brittain, 27, and Lisa Butler, 34, of North Bay, have been together for four years and moved to Scarborough a year ago from Keighley, West Yorkshire.

They met at a gig where one of Ben’s friends was a member of the band.

Ben said he had been wanting to propose to Lisa and thought the lighthouse would be the perfect setting.

He explained: “We both really like it down by the harbour. We’ve often said how nice it is.

“It’s also popped up in conversation what it would be like at the top of the lighthouse.”

Ben contacted Steve Parker, commodore of Scarborough Yacht Club, and asked if he could help him make the arrangements.

He said: “It was a complete surprise for Lisa - she had no idea. I told her we were going out for something to eat and that we were going to meet someone at the lighthouse who could let us have a look inside.

“We had champagne on ice ready at the top of the tower. I was a bit worried about the weather, but the clouds cleared about an hour before we went down so it was a beautiful day for it.”

Happily Lisa said yes and the couple celebrated afterwards with dinner at Antons in Sandside.

Ben said: “Our friends and family are overjoyed for us - they said it’s about time!

“Steve also presented us with a winner’s flag from a yacht race earlier that day, He said there wasn’t just one winner that day!”

The couple are now planning to tie the knot in summer 2016.
