EAGER young Beavers from the Derwent Valley colony got a lesson in fitness from local expert Nick Ingham of Compass Gym, who helped them on their way to their latest badge.

Mr Ingham, who is a former beaver and cub and still has the uniform to prove it, dropped into the scout hut near Irton Garden Centre to lead a vigorous session which included monitoring the youngsters’ heartbeats.

Assistant Beaver leader Elaine Jenkin said: “We’re working towards the fitness challenge badge which the Beavers can earn and Nick offered to support us by doing a fitness session.”

All 24 Beavers took part in the session, hurdling and flexing their way through a challenging work-out.

“They loved it,” said Ms Jenkin. “A lot of them were talking about it in school the next day.”

The assistant leader added that the scout group wanted to thank everyone who supported their bid in the recent Voice Your Choice initiative, which saw them achieve the highest number of points for their project.

The group was awarded £3,000 to complete the renovation of a currently underused meeting room at their headquarters in Irton.
