Scarborough Hospital has launched a fundraising appeal to raise £8,000 for refurbishment work in the children’s outpatient area.

Following the success of the Snopdrop Appeal - which raised £120,000 for a maternity bereavement suite - the project will look at making hospital visits more welcoming for youngsters.

Hospital fundraiser Maya Richardson said: “We would like to refurbish our children’s outpatients area through the use of modern and vibrant decor to make it more friendly and welcoming.

“Visiting a hospital can be daunting at any age, but even more so for children and teenagers.”

The first big event as part of the appeal will be the Scarborough Hospital ball, which will be held at The Royal Hotel on Saturday May 16.

Tickets cost £40 per person and the event will feature live music performed by Soul Rida, Table Magic from Tobias and there is the chance to win on the casino tables too.

Maya said: “We are also hoping to raise funds to purchase televisions and gaming consoles to not only put a bit of fun into the visit, but also as an educational aid to give adolescents the relevant information they need in regards to their visit.

“Alongside this, we would like to provide fun and educational toys to help support visiting babies, toddlers and young children.

“These distractions can be very useful in ensuring they have a positive experience when attending the hospital, and not only help to deal with nerves and anxiety whilst waiting but also gives a lasting impression of the hospital that prevents them fearing future visits.

“This project will cost around £8,000. We are hoping the ball will make a large contribution towards making a difference to our young patients in Scarborough and the surrounding area.”

The last fundraising appeal at the hospital - for a new maternity bereavement suite - attracted strong support, with many groups, individuals, schools and businesses organising their own fundraising events.

If you wish to organise an event in support of the new appeal, all donations will be gratefully received.
