As Scarborough Cricket Festival gets under way, a supporter has made a sporting gesture to St Catherine’s Hospice.

Paul Stephenson has donated two cricket bats belonging to his late father Derek - one autographed by Geoff Boycott, the other signed by the Yorkshire team which won the Benson and Hedges Cup at Lords in 1987.

Derek was a life-long member and former player for Scarborough Cricket Club.

“He never missed a year at Scarborough Cricket Ground,” Paul said. “I first went to a game with my dad when I was about one and I went nearly every year with him after that.”

Derek played for Scarborough Cricket Club in the 50s and was so passionate about the game that after his death from cancer in 1999, his ashes were scattered at the cricket ground.
