Bolton Abbey, York Minster and retired Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield, fresh from winning the rugby league treble, will be among the pictures to adorn some of the buses that transport passengers between the airport’s terminals and hotels.

Tourism promoter Welcome to Yorkshire hoped to encourage a few more of Heathrow’s 73 million passengers a year to come up north.

Chief executive Sir Gary Verity said: “What better way to spread the word about Yorkshire than at Europe’s busiest airport.

“We hope that when these stunning images catch the eye of millions of world-wide travellers they will be inspired to come and spend time in God’s Own County and see for themselves how beautiful Yorkshire is.

“The Tour de France promoted Yorkshire to a global audience of millions and this ambitious campaign will promote the county to many more visitors from around the world.”

Other images featured on the buses will include Gunnerside in Swaledale, The Hepworth in Wakefield, Hole of Horcum in the North York Moors National Park, Staithes on the dinosaur coast and Brimham Rocks near Harrogate.

The tourism body teamed up with advertising firm Mobile Media, which took over space on all 30 of Heathrow’s National Express buses.

Mobile Media managing director Karen Olsen said: “With a base in Wakefield and years of working with Yorkshire-based firms, teaming up with Welcome to Yorkshire was a natural fit for us.

“Many of our staff are from the county, so they’re absolutely over the moon that Yorkshire is the very first thing these world-wide travellers will see.

“We’re all about bold ideas and breaking new ground, so can’t wait to see this bus rollout and welcome passengers.”
