TONIGHT’S guest at Scarborough Jazz taught next week’s a thing or two.
Guitarist Jim Birkett works at the Sage in Gateshead as artistic advisor for jazz, popular and contemporary music education.
He leads a jazz, popular and commercial music degree course, which saxophonist Jamie Toms took in 2006.
Jim, aka Dr Jazz, has a PhD in new approaches to jazz improvisation - hence the Dr.
Jim has played with various US artists including Scott Hamilton, Bud Freeman, Peanuts Hucko, Spike Robinson, Kenny Davern and Harry Allen.
The list of British jazz stars he has gigged with is equally impressive, including Snake Davis, Peter King, Alan Skidmore, Guy Barker and Don Weller.
He will be backed by the Mike Gordon Trio.
Admission will cost £2.
Jamie Toms plays with a few bands, including the quintet he will take to the Cask next week.
He leads the sax section of the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band and plays with soul-funk band Mamacoca.
As a member of the Funk Regulators, he has headlined the Jazz Action stage at Stockton’s Riverside festival for the last few years.
Jamie has played at the Royal Festival Hall and on the other side of the Channel.
The last time Jamie played at the jazz club he was with two musicians who return with him next week: Lloyd Wright on guitar and Jonathan Proud on bass. The other musicians in his quintet are James Peacock on piano and Richard Brown on drums.
Admission will cost £3.
