Cllr John Nock has been appointed to the borough council cabinet.

The Conservative member for the Mulgrave ward in Whitby accepted the invitation from SBC leader Derek Bastiman to replace Cllr Andrew Backhouse who resigned from the cabinet last week due to “personal and increased work commitments.”

Cllr Nock, who now is portfolio holder for strategic transport, transport services and ICT, said: “It was a complete surprise to be asked but I am truly honoured. I do have a lot of thoughts on public transport. My ward in Mulgrave has a lot of countryside and I feel it has been cut off in recent years.

“I would love to bring more public transport to the area but it is still early days. I will have meetings in the coming weeks to see what position we are in and what the burning issues are.”

Cllr Nock’s appointment follows Filey and Whitby Town Councils’ decision in passing a vote of no confidence in the cabinet and leadership at Scarborough Council.

An online petition also calling for a vote of no confidence in the council has now attracted 2,433 signatures.

He said: “I find it disappointing as we have a group of people who are trying hard to put something back into the borough. Our objective is to make the borough a great place to live for residents and make it the UK’s number one holiday destination.”

He added: “We can achieve this by working together with town councils and parish councils.”
