Letter: Suspicious smell needs to be investigated in Weaponness Valley Road

Four years ago you published an article in the Evening News about the leak near our homes, and later the council saying everything was alright.

This smell has never gone away and in September last year became so bad we contacted various people.

They in turn blamed the residents for throwing organic waste into the stream. How ridiculous is that? On certain days the stench is right down the road.

Environmental health are taking samples of the water but what they are not doing is taking samples of the black sludge. This is the tar-like stench that comes from the coal buried very deep on the gas works.

Why are the council putting people’s health at risk from this contamination?

Why have they not put up signs warning people and why has the problem not been rectified by now? We are being fobbed off by the council. Something needs to be done. This should be more of a priority than building the universities.
