Look Who is coming to Scarboro'

Filming will be held at Yorkshire Coast College’s Westwood campus for a new feature-length film about the famous and controversial psychiatrist RD Laing.

The drama, Mad To Be Normal, thas been filming in York and at Scampston Hall in Malton this week before coming to Scarborough during halfterm week, which starts on February 15..

With an all-star cast which includes David Tennant, known for his role in Doctor Who and Harry Potter among others, Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men), Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects), the production is already gathering a lot of attention.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Laing, who is played by Tennant, was an international celebrity, expressing opinions which turned the psychiatric establishment firmly against him.

Laing treated his patients like fellow human beings – giving them their own time and space.

In 1965 Laing set up Kingsley Hall, a therapeutic sanctuary where patients could live just as they chose. Laing became somewhat of a cult figure, with crowds flocking to hear him speak. Mad To Be Normal is being produced by Gizmo Films, an independent film production company.

The Scarborough News understands that parts of the Westwood campus will be used as period classrooms for part of the production.

Some of the students at the campus will also be helping out during the filming.
