Lunch date for Versatile musicians

YORKSHIRE Wolds Versatile Brass will play at the first in a new series of concerts at Beiderbecke’s Hotel on occasional Sunday lunchtimes.

This quintet have performed in some the UK’s finest brass bands, including Black Dyke Mills, Brighouse & Rastrick, Carlton Main, Rothwell Temperance and Besses o’ th’ Barn. They are Craig Gaskell and Joanna Peacham on cornet and flugal horn, Les McCormack on horn, Tony Turner on trombone and Tim Priestley on bass.

l COASTIVAL was plugged around the country when cafe owner and gig promoter Steve Dickinson appeared on Radio 2. Steve, who runs Mojo’s in Victoria Road, was a contestant on the Ken Bruce show’s Popmaster quiz on Monday. His respectable 18 points wasn’t enough to beat a shop assistant in Goole, who scored 24. But Steve, who received a CD wallet for his efforts, mentioned the annual Acoustic Gathering, which he organises, and gave a big plug to next month’s Coastival. Ken Bruce seemed genuinely interested and said: “It’s all going on in Scarborough; it sounds like a great place”. He said he had been to the town but not realised it had such a thriving music and entertainments scene.
