Scarborough Athletic's Will Annan always knew that former Hull City teammate Harry Maguire had the potential to be an international star.
Maguire scored England's first goal as the Three Lions swept aside Sweden on Saturday and booked their place in Wednesday's World Cup semi-final against Croatia.
Having turned out on a handful of occasions in the same City development team as Maguire, the success of the gargantuan centre-back is coming as no surprise to Boro man Annan.
"I played in the same team as him on a few occasions, none of us could understand why he wasn't a first-team regular because he was head and shoulders above the others who had dropped down," he said.
"He just used to get on the ball the same as he does for England, dribble it forward and then lay it off to start an attack.
"We all said how good he was. He was an absolute man mountain and comfortably the best player I had played alongside.
"If you look how he has come on, he has continually made the step up to perform at the next level.
"He moved from League One with Sheffield United to perform at Hull and then make the step up to be Leicester City's best player.
"Now he is doing exactly the same on the international stage with England.
"You can now see him getting another big move in the not too distant future. He could and probably should be playing for one of the country's top four clubs and you can definitely see that happening."
