Man, 47, arrested after woman's death on A64 near Scarborough; a second man was released under investigation

A woman who died on the A64 near Scarborough yesterday was in her early 30s and from the town, police say.

Officers have not yet named the woman and say her devastated family are receiving specialist police support.

Inquiries are ongoing into the incident near Cayton Low Road which was reported by the ambulance service at 12.18am yesterday.

A 29-year-old local man, who was arrested initially on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, has been released under investigation regarding suspected dangerous driving.

A 47-year-old man from Scarborough was arrested yesterday afternoon on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at a road traffic collision. He is currently being questioned in custody.

The incident meant roads were shut around the area yesterday morning while police investigated.

All routes re-opened at 10.30am and police thanked drivers for their patience and understanding while emergency teams worked at the scene.

Officers are still appealing for witnesses and information about the incident, in particular any dash-cam footage from passing vehicles at the time it happened.
