Man admits causing road death

A driver whose actions resulted in the death of a Newby motorcyclist appeared in tears before a court on Thursday (May 1).

Lee Alan Harris, 39, died following a collision on the A171, Scarborough to Whitby road at Cloughton Moor, on July 27, last year.

Before the court was Gary Thompson, 38, of Redcar, pleading guilty to a charge of causing death by careless driving.

Thompson also admitted charges of both failing to stop at the scene of the accident and to report it. Adjourning the case for the preparation of an all-option pre-sentence report,

The Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, warned Thompson that there were no promises attached to the adjournment.

He said that it was likely that Thompson would be facing a custodial sentence.

The case was adjourned until May 30 and Thompson was re-admitted to unconditional bail.
