Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision near Malton.

The collision involving a moped and dark-coloured Mitsubishi Chamonix people carrier occurred on the A64 at West Knapton, near the junction with the B1258 at around 7.50am today (Tuesday).

The rider of the moped, a 21-year-old local man, suffered serious injuries in the incident and was airlifted to James Cook Hospital, where he sadly passed away.

The man’s family have been informed, however we are not in a position to release his identity at this time.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward with information. In particular, the police are trying to trace the driver of a car who was travelling behind the moped before turning off towards Yedingham.

The driver of the car may be unaware that the collision occurred but may hold vital information that can help the police with their enquiries.

Anyone who saw either the moped or the Mitsubishi prior to the collision is also urged to contact the police.

Anyone who can help officers with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for Traffic Constable Leanne Anderson or Scarborough Roads Policing Group.

Alternatively, information can be emailed to leanne.anderson@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
