Mayor given veterans’ military badge

SCARBOROUGH’s mayor John Blackburn received a surprise presentation from the Royal British Legion.

Following Sunday’s cross-planting service in Alma Square, Cllr Blackburn received an Armed Forces Veterans’ Badge from John Anderson, secretary of Scarborough’s Royal British Legion.

The presentation was made at the branch’s base in Bar Street.

Mr Anderson said: “When John came to do the Poppy Launch with us, he spotted the veteran’s badge on my blazer and said he’d have to apply for his one day, being ex RAF.

“We managed to get one for him and it was nice to present it in a room full of veterans.

“It is something we were pleased to do and it will mean a lot when John wears his badge to lay a wreath at Oliver’s Mount.”

Cllr Blackburn said he was “over the moon” to receive the honour, adding: “It was totally out of the blue and I was delighted.

“The Royal British Legion do an excellent job. Until I became mayor I didn’t realise how much they did and how much money they raise in Scarborough.”
